The Biggest Mistakes to Avoid When Trying to Go from Beginner to Intermediate
Is your English stuck at the beginner level? Many learners struggle because of common mistakes, not because of lack of effort. Here are five mistakes holding you back—and how to overcome them.
1. Focusing Too Much on Grammar Rules
Grammar is essential, but memorizing rules without using them won't help.
Fix: Practice grammar through real-life examples. When you get home from school or work, write out sentences describing your day. Say these sentences aloud, and focus on clarity over perfection.
2. Memorizing Vocabulary Without Context
Lists of words all by themselves are hard to remember.
Fix: Learn vocabulary through context—read articles, listen to conversations, and focus on collocations. Use new words in sentences and practice daily to make them stick.
3. Avoiding Speaking Due to Fear of Mistakes
Fear of making mistakes can stop your progress.
Fix: Start small with low-pressure situations: talk to a friend, tutor, or even yourself.
4. Over-Reliance on Translations
Thinking in your native language slows your English progress.
Fix: Begin thinking in English by describing your surroundings. Use translations as little as possible and immerse yourself in English by watching English language videos and reading.
5. Setting Unrealistic Expectations
Expecting fluency overnight will lead to burn out. There are no cheat codes to improve your English. It takes time, patience, and effort.
Fix: Focus on small daily habits. Try to dedicate 15 minutes a day to improving your English.
